Discover the world of bioinformatics
DNA
is an important topic in biology and chemistry education, but in
practice it can be quite abstract for pupils. This makes it difficult to comprehend the crucial role it plays in all organisms.
With the genomics research of today, enormous
amounts of data about genomes, DNA and proteins become available. The results of
genomics research have a large impact on our daily lives.
The field of bioinformatics is one of the new research areas of the
genomics era. But what is bioinformatics? What do bioinformaticians do?
Why do we need bioinformatics? With this website we want to answer these
questions and bring bioinformatics to your school and your home.
Bioinformatics@school proudly presents:
Bioinformatics theory:
- The basics: Background material to freshen up your
knowledge about DNA and proteins
- Bioinformatics: An introduction to this field of science
Bioinformatics in practice:
- Murder at the airport: Become a Crime Scene Investigator and investigate the cause of death of an American tourist in Amsterdam
- 3D drug design: Use 3-dimensional
protein models to design an antidote against a deadly poison
- Retinitis pigmentosa: See how a mutation can
affect your vision
All practical assignments take 45 to 60 minutes
Bioinformatics close to home:
- Bioinformatics shop: Bioinformatics is closer to you than you may think (**under construction**)
- Essays: Want to do a science project about bioinformatics? Write an essay or a report? We give you a head start.
Enjoy the world of bioinformatics!
