About the theory section

SpeurderBioinformatics@school aims to give you a feel of what bioinformatics is, based on learning-by-doing. However, some theoretical knowledge is required for this practical work. This section contains a lot of information about biochemistry and bioinformatics presented as short text fragments and a number of exercises. You can use this PowerPoint presentation for extra help in preparing for the practical assignments.
Microsoft Windows users without PowerPoint can install this viewer. See the software section for more information.

The goal of the theory section is two-fold:

  1. To refresh your basic knowledge about DNA, proteins and structures. You need these basics to successfully do the practical exercises.
  2. Explain what bioinformatics is, and what you can do with it. You can find out how bioinformatics affects your daily life in the section about bioinformatics close to home.

You may have already learned all about proteins and DNA. If you think you have enough background knowledge, you can skip straight to the introduction to bioinformatics.
